INTRODUCTION TO

TAINAN DISTRICT AGRICULTURAL
RESEARCH & EXTENSION STATION, COA

PLANT PROTECTION

One of the major activities is to develop disease/insect resistant varieties of important crops. Research on biological and non-chemical control measures are also emphasized. Eggplant resistant rootstocks are used for control of bacterial wilt, fusarium wilt and nematode root knot of tomato. Color stick-board, sex pheromone, insect growth regulator and natural enemy are also used to reduce pest damage. GPS has assisted in finding bacterial leaf spot free zone of carambola. Studies on the control of diseases and pests on herb plants are also conducted. Control calendars and techniques for the proper use of pesticides are developed, and education for farmers to produce GAP (Good Agricultural Product) fruits and vegetables are also offered. Propagation of bamboo mosaic virus-free plants as well as verification system are established. Monitoring of new disease and pests, disease and pest diagnostic services and orchid virus indexing have been established.
