RICE

Japonica rice cultivars Tainan 5 and 9 from Chiayi Branch Station used to be the major varieties. But they are now superseded by several further improved varieties. Taikeng 2, released in 1989, is a high yielder with preferred eating quality and slight dormancy. Taikeng Glutinous 1, released in 1990, has high yield, excellent grain quality and resistance to rice blast, and is now the most popular japonica glutinous variety in Taiwan. Taikeng 8, released in 1992, is now well accepted by farmers, and in the recent years more than 80,000 ha were planted with this variety annually. Taikeng Glutinous 3, released in 1995, has high yield potential and good quality. Taikeng 17, released in 1998, has excellent grain quality in both appearance and eating quality, and is resistant to rice blast. A new glutinous variety, Tainan Glutinous 10, was released in 2003. This variety also has large seed, high yield potential and good quality, and is resistant to insects and diseases.

The direction for rice research includes breeding of high quality rice for staple food and brewing purposes as well as improving cultivation technology and organic farming system. Development of proper rice-based cropping systems is also one of the important targets.
