Mango

In Taiwan, mango is now ranked second for fruit export based on the exported value. The current cultivated varieties are either derived from the long term selection of the adapted introduced varieties or from the crosses of elite varieties. Current growth acres were around 16,352 hectares and yield was about 167,247 metric ton in 2012. Average yield on major varieties varied from 8 to 12 metric ton/ha.

The primary cultivation areas are located in southern Taiwan such as Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung with the latitude lower than the Tropic of Cancer. Although the cultivation area and the total yield decreased, the recent increase in export volume and value should be an indication of the effectiveness of this quality and safety management system improvement.

In 2004, ‘Irwin’ mango was chosen by the Council of Agriculture, R.O.C. (Taiwan), along with Taiwan's Phalaenopsis orchid, Oolong tea and Tilapia fish, as one of the island's four ‘Flagship Export Products’. Mango is mainly exported to Hong Kong, Singapore, Mainland China, Australia, Southeast Asia, Japan and South Korea etc. In 2003, the exported amount reached 13,271 metric ton and the yearly variation was around 5,000 metric tons during 2001-2012. However, the total exported values have a tendency of increase and reached more than US$13,564,000 dollars in 2013.

In addition to domestic consumption, mango products, such as fresh mango, juice, frozen mango (in cube) and processed fruits (dry preserved fruit, green preservative slices and cans etc.) are also for export.

Today, most researches focused the studies on mango diseases and pest control as well as fruit setting, fruit quality, maturation, and related topics.
