Papaya is originated in central and south Americans and is one of the most economically important tropical fruit in Taiwan. The fruits can be produced all the year round, and is high yielding. There are ca. 3000 ha or 133,000 m.t. of fruits are produced annually. Cultivar Tainung 2 is the major variety, it accounted for 90%, and grown in Pingtung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Chiayi, Yuinlin and Nantou. About 53.4% or 1,573 ha are grown in Tainan city. Most papaya fruits are consumed in Taiwan, a small portion is exported.
Due to the devastating of papaya ring spot virus, papaya plants can only be grown in the net house with a special bending plant type to control the plant height and easy for harvesting. Papaya plants can grow on the same piece of land for 2-3 years, and then, they should be replanted again. Most seedlings came from asexual reproduction such as grafting, cutting, or tissue culture, replanting plants by seeds is not very common but is feasible.
