Japonica rice cultivars Tainan No.5 and No.9 from Lucao Branch Station previously were once extremely popular.. Taikeng No.2, released in 1989, is high-yielding with excellent eating quality and remains the principal premium rice cultivar in eastern Taiwan. Taikeng No.8, released in 1992, combines high yield and strong lodging resistance and was once the most widely planted indica rice in Taiwan., Taikeng Glutinous No.3, released in 1995, has become the most extensively cultivated glutinous indica rice nationwide in recent years. Tainan No.11, released in 2004, offers superior grain quality and high yield, and since 2006 has occupied over 65 percent of Taiwan’s rice-cultivation area. Tainan No.14, released in 2009, can be served as brown rice without presoaking before cooking. Tainan No.15, released in 2011, is a giant embryo variety with higher GABA content. In 2012, in collaboration with National Taiwan University, we developed Tainan No.16, a near-isogenic line of Koshihikari and Taiwan’s first rice variety bred via marker-assisted selection. Nandares No.17 released in 2016, is the first green-manure rice in Taiwan able to overcome continuous-cropping obstacles. Tainan No.19 released in 2019, integrates water-saving irrigation, disease resistance, and low chalkiness. Tainan No.20, released in 2023, is an ultra-textured, low-amylose variety that has been enthusiastically adopted by grain merchants and consumers. Tainan No.21 for sake brewing released in 2024.
The objectives for ongoing rice research include breeding of multi-purpose and stress resistant rice, as well as cultural improvement for high-quality and organic rice.
