MuskmelonThe statistics showed the island wide acreage of muskmelon was 2,767 ha in 2012, and most of them were in Tainan (55.2%), followed by Yuinlin (16.6%) and Chiayi (13.5%). The service area of Tainan DARES accounted for 85.3% of the total. The average fruit yield was 1.3 tons/ha, and most of them were grown in the plastic tunnels. We've also developed cantaloupe varieties resistant to powdery mildew and with high sugar content, suitable for both hot (Tainan 11, 13, 14) and cool (Tainan 12, 16) climates. Tainan No.15 is an early-maturing, heat-tolerant muskmelon suitable for high-yield greenhouse cultivation in summer.
Oriental melonThe acreage of oriental melon was 2,082 ha in 2012, and most of them were grown in Kaohsiung (29.6%), followed by Yuinlin (18.2%) and Pingtung (18.2%). The service area of Tainan DARES accounted for 40.4% of the total, and the average yield was 1.2 tons/ha. Most oriental melon is grown in the open filed. Some of them were planted in the protected facilities with up-right sticks. The profit of the latter cultivation model increased 5 times. |
